Spring has finally sprung and for all you wonderful book deal lovers that also means it’s time for the Houston County Friends of the Library Annual Old Book Sale. This year’s sale is only days away and will take place at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry on Thursday, May 2 – Saturday, May 4.
This is the place to be if you’re looking for great deals on gently used, collectible, and even recently released books. The Friends work very hard throughout the year processing and boxing books in preparation for the annual sale. No matter what you’re looking for, there is a good chance the Friends will have something for you among the 90,000 books they will have stocked at the sale. Maybe you are like some of our Facebook followers and you’re looking for genealogy books (they got it.) or good children’s books (they got that, too!).
Are you like some of our regular patrons who love cookbooks? One particular patron visiting the Perry Library recently told us that when she goes to the FOL Old Book Sale, she heads straight for the cookbooks. Don’t worry, they will be easy to find. The Friends do an awesome job at labeling the sections for easy navigation.
Speaking of navigating the sale, let me give you some of the daily admission details. The FIRST day of the sale, Thursday, May 4, there is a $5.00 admission fee. This first day is considered a preview day and is free for all current members of Houston County Friends of the Library. Now you may think skipping the $5.00 day, but that all depends on your personal shopping preferences. Preview day enthusiasts get first pick of the books on all those tables. There are some heavy hitters that come the first day of the sale and they mean business. They arrive and stand in line with all sorts of containers to hold their book finds, from laundry baskets and rolling file boxes to carryon luggage and giant trash cans taped to hand trucks. Will you join in the preview day excitement and get in the line? If so, hours for the first day are 10:00 am – 8:00 pm. Arrive early, last year’s line had already reached the clock tower with 30 minutes left before opening.
If you are one to opt out of the first day, then make sure you stop by Friday, May 3rd between 9:00 am and 8:00 pm. Admission is FREE. Come by on Saturday, May 4th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm and get a double bonus: free admission and everything is half price all day!
One of our young patrons is very excited about the Old Book Sale this year. She told us that she always leaves the sale with two big bags of books. We love hearing great Book Sale stories like this from our patrons. We’ve heard reports from the Friends that some customers buy enough books to last them the whole year until the next year’s sale. Don’t think for one second that our local book lovers are able to have all of this book goodness to themselves – no way! Book lovers from all over Georgia and surrounding states come every year to the Old book Sale in Perry.
As always, it is all done for a great cause. The Old Book Sale allows Houston County Friends of the Library to donate very generous amounts of money each year to Houston County Public Library System. Each library branch uses FOL funds to purchase new materials throughout the year. So to all of the Friends and all of you who buy books at the Old Book Sale, we say THANK YOU!
