Language Learning for the Entire Family

Hello! Ciao! Hola! Bonjour! Hallo! Ni hao!

Are you interested in learning a new language? Do you have a little one who shows interest in French, Spanish, or German? Interested in learning American Sign Language? If your answer to any of these question is yes, then we have resources that can help.

The Houston County Public Library System has an awesome online resource called Mango Language Learning Center. This free resource is available through the Library Website and is accessible from any internet-connected computer by using your library card.

The Houston County Public Libraries Mango Language Learning Center allows you to learn the following languages for free: Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Italian, and Spanish.  There is also an English course for those wanting to learn English as a Second Language. Click the logo above and get started today.

Now, we cannot leave out our little patrons. We now have something for those little library lovers who also have a love for other languages. Perry Public Library has a vast collection of Little Pim Fun with Languages DVDs. These award-winning DVDs are perfect for babies, toddlers and preschoolers. Most languages are available in six separate DVDs and teach words and phrases relating to “eating and drinking,” “wake up smiling,” “playtime,” “in my home,” “happy, sad, and silly,” and “I can count.”

Available at the Perry Public Library are the complete six-disc sets for little patrons to learn Spanish, French, German, Chinese, and English as a Second Language. Also available is the 3-disc set for learning Arabic. Not sure where to begin, the Little Pim website has a quick quiz that parents can use to determine which language is best for their child. Find the quiz by clicking here.

Although the Little Pim collection is housed at the Perry branch, they are available for all patrons of Houston County Public Library System. Place one on hold and have it sent to Centerville or Nola Brantley today!

Interest in signing, especially baby signing has grown over the past several years. Houston County Public Library System is very excited to assist in your endeavor to learn American Sign Language by provided Signing Savvy, an online resource dictionary with high-resolution video of American Sign Language (ASL) signs, fingerspelled words, and other common signs used within the United States and Canada. The Signing Savvy resource can be accessed through the Online Resources on the library website with your Houston County Public Library System library card and provides the ability to create custom word lists and quizzes.
