Houston Healthcare is inviting all Houston County residents to their annual “Family Fair 2012” health fair. The health fair is from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, July 28th, at the Galleria Mall in Centerville. This is an annual event on the weekend before school starts. The Houston Healthcare Family Fair will offer free health screenings and education, information on low-cost or free community resources for families, recreational and physical activity ideas, family entertainment and more!
The Houston County Public Library System will be on site to provide a variety of health information resources. If you can’t make it to the health fair, come in to your local library branch. We have numerous books on health and medical topics, both general and specific. Nonfiction materials to check out and reference materials to look at are in and around 610 – 618. Can’t make it to the library during our opening hours? Don’t forget our online resources! All you need is your Houston County Library card and pin number. Here are just a few of the online resources you can access 24/7. LearningExpressLibrary, which provides access to study guides and sample tests for those who are interested in a career in the health professions. GALILEO eBooks at EBSCOhost, formerly known at NetLibrary, provides access to electronic books (ebooks), including reference books, scholarly books, publications of many university presses, and consumer books that have been converted into digital format. Also available through EBSCOhost are such valuable resources as Alt HealthWatch, Consumer Health Complete, MasterFILE Premier, MedlinePlus, The Merck Manuals and Encyclopaedia Britannica Online Reference Center.
Some websites that are available even without your library card are The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and USA.gov. The CDC website offers a variety of options for researching current health issues including, up-to-date information on current diseases and illnesses, vaccine information, general health information, safety, and wellness. USA.gov is the official gateway to all government information, allows searching of more than 15 million web pages from federal and state governments, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories. Search “Health and Nutrition” to find an A-Z list of health topics and resources on insurance, prescription drugs, nutrition, caregiving, and more.
